A site survey is frequently the most underbudgeted step in a solar project, and it's also the one most likely to cause expensive redesigns if skipped or rushed. Before a single line diagram or layout drawing is produced, a thorough survey needs to answer questions about the land's shape, soil, shading, and proximity to the grid. Here's what a complete MWscale site survey should cover.

Topographic Survey

A topographic survey maps the site's contours, natural drainage patterns, and elevation changes, and separates usable area from land that's unsuitable for construction lowlying zones prone to waterlogging, for instance, or slopes too steep for standard mounting structures. This map becomes the base layer that every later design decision builds on.

Shadow Analysis

Even a small amount of shading on a few strings can disproportionately cut a solar array's output. A proper shadow analysis checks for trees, buildings, transmission towers, and neighboring structures throughout the year, not just at the time of the site visit, and confirms the array's orientation will capture maximum sunlight generally facing true south in the northern hemisphere, adjusted for the specific latitude.

Soil Investigation

Soil testing determines the bearing capacity needed to size foundations correctly for the mounting structure, and flags corrosion risks for sites near the coast or in industrial zones with high soil or air salinity. Skipping this step is a common cause of foundation failures or premature structural corrosion years into a plant's life.

Grid Proximity & Substation Distance

The distance from the proposed site to the nearest substation has a direct effect on evacuation infrastructure cost and on how long the interconnection approval process takes. Sites far from existing grid infrastructure often need dedicated transmission lines built, which can add months to the project timeline and significant cost to the budget.

Access & Logistics

For projects above roughly 10 MW, road width and loadbearing capacity for the route into the site matter more than most firsttime developers expect module pallets, tracker components, and transformers are heavy and bulky, and a site that looks fine on a map can turn out to be inaccessible to the trucks that need to reach it.

Regulatory Checks at Survey Stage

The survey stage is also when landuse classification should be verified, along with whether the project's capacity triggers any environmental clearance requirements. Catching a landuse mismatch at this stage is far cheaper than discovering it after land has already been leased or purchased.
