Rooftop vs Ground-Mount vs Floating Solar: Which Fits Your MW-Scale Project?

One of the first decisions in any megawattscale solar project isn't about equipment brands or financing it's about format. A business with 3–5 MW of power demand typically has three real options: rooftop, groundmount, or floating solar. Each comes with a different cost structure, timeline, and set of constraints, and getting this decision wrong early tends to cascade into redesigns later. Here's how the three compare for Indian MWscale projects.

GroundMount Solar

Groundmount is the default choice when open land is available, and for good reason. It offers the lowest cost per wattpeak of the three formats, the simplest structural design, and the easiest path to using singleaxis trackers for a yield boost. It's also the format best suited to open access and group captive projects, where a plant is built specifically to supply power to one or more offsite consumers. The tradeoff is land: a groundmount plant typically needs 4–6 acres per MW depending on the mounting structure, and land acquisition, title verification, and useconversion approvals can take longer than the design and construction itself.

Rooftop Solar at MW Scale

Rooftop makes sense when a business already owns large factory, warehouse, or commercial roof space and wants to avoid land cost altogether. The economics look attractive on paper no land purchase, often faster regulatory clearance but the engineering gets harder as capacity rises. Above roughly 500 kWp, a proper structural load assessment of the existing roof becomes nonnegotiable, and it's common for shadow analysis and available roof area to eliminate 20–30% of what looked usable from a satellite image. Rooftop MWscale projects also tend to be split across multiple buildings, which adds cabling and SLD complexity that a single groundmount plant doesn't have.

Floating Solar

Floating solar is the newer option, deployed on reservoirs, irrigation ponds, or industrial water bodies when land is scarce or expensive. The water's cooling effect on the panels typically improves energy yield by roughly 5–8% compared to an equivalent groundmount plant in the same location, and there's no competing landuse conflict. The catch is capital cost floating structures, anchoring systems, and specialized cabling raise CAPEX meaningfully above groundmount, and the pool of experienced floatingsolar EPC contractors in India is still smaller than for groundmount or rooftop.

Which One Should You Choose?

In practice, the decision comes down to three questions: How much land or roof space do you actually have access to? What's your budget per MW? And how quickly do you need the plant operational? A feasibility study that looks at all three formats against your specific site rather than assuming groundmount by default is what prevents a costly format change midway through design.
